“You get as much out of the riding and the horses as you put in. Be the best you can be in everything you do.”
That is life’s motto for Joan Lockie, who enters her fourth summer as our head coach of the 50th Legion Athletic Camp’s equestrian program for the summer of 2011.
The equestrian program has been in operation for 43 summers and Lockie will be only the fifth head coach.
A graduate of Windthorst High School in Saskatchewan, Lockie started her equestrian career as a trainer of standardbred race horses. The harness racing circuit would have her traveling across North America including stops at the famous Little Brown Jug held annually since 1946 in Delaware, Ohio.
In 1984, Lockie along with her husband David, started showing and breeding “quality” American Quarter Horses. They include Zips Famous Amos, which reached status of an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) champion achievement; the highest award for the breed.
Lockie continues to globetrot her way around North America attending 30 to 40 AQHA shows a year.
“I train some customer horses and coach youth, amateur and select amateur people along with English and western,” says Lockie. “We also do some judging through out summer and have a long line along with two year-old pleasure horses ready for the fall futurities.
