Head Coach Chris Courchaine
Volleyball (Week 3)
Chris Courchaine is another in a long line of Legion Athletic Camp alumnus to advance from the athlete ranks to coach, and head coach.
Courchaine attended camp while a student at Niverville Collegiate Institute in Manitoba. A two-time provincial volleyball all-star, his high school career was highlighted by a 1989 provincial championship.
Courchaine was also part of Manitoba's silver medal juvenile boys squad at national championships. His athletic abilities carried over to the hardwood with a high school provincial basketball title.
In university he was a member of the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons.
Courchaine has coached 29 years at the camp, the last 15 as the head coach. He currently teaches at Fort Richmond High School in Winnipeg.
Of his Legion Athletic Camp experience he states: "It’s been fantastic working with athletes from all across Canada and at all levels. Having them learn skills outside on the grass courts, on our sand court and in the gym allows them to adapt to a variety of situations, which only strengthens their skills. It is also a great chance to meet people and make friends from across our province and from other provinces as well.”
He also makes note of the sand volleyball court (also included 16 outdoor grass courts and two gymnasium courts) situated at the Legion Athletic Camp. "Having the sand court opens up another style of game and it is one of the best (sand) courts I have ever seen."
