Big Ben is perhaps one of London’s if not the world’s best-known clocks and landmarks.
Big Ben is also perhaps one of southwestern Manitoba’s, or at least Pierson’s best-known clocks and landmarks.
Trying to keep time with Big Ben are Alex and Philip Arndt.
The two track and field stars have their sights set on Big Ben better know as Ben Arndt their big brother.
“He (Ben) is my role model,” states Alex, 17, of his older brother Ben. “Track is my best sport and Ben has achieved a lot in the sport and I want to follow.”
Ben, 20, is looking forward to his second Canada Summer Games (Regina August 6-20, 2005) competition with the focus on decathlon. He has also represented Manitoba three times at the Legion National Track and Field Championships bringing home a collection of gold, silver and bronze medallions.
“I focus on beating Ben, which I can do sometimes,” admits Alex, who will also be attending his second Legion National Track and Field Championships to be held Aug 4-11 in Edmonton. “It makes me train harder to beat out Ben.”
Alex recently returned from the Juvenile Tri-Provincial Dual Meet in Regina, Saskatchewan where the highlight was a third place finish in the 4 x 100 relay.
“The meet in Saskatchewan was a test to see how the competition will be, at least from Saskatchewan and Alberta, at the Legion nationals,” said Alex who is scheduled to compete in the decathlon at nationals.
Alex trains with the Brandon Rivals Track and Field club.
Philip, 15, who competed in the Legion nationals last year also brought home honours from Regina with a 2nd in the 4 x 400 relay.
“The (Regina) meet was a lot of fun,” said Philip. “My brother (Alex) gave me some advice and he was rooting for me on the sideline (in the 400) telling me to change into second gear.”
Philip too looks to Ben for inspiration.
“I am trying to be like Ben…be a multi-task athlete. It is a friendly rivalry.”
“Brotherly love,” interjects Alex.
The two brothers train and work during the summer at the 44th Legion Athletic Camp located at the International Peace Garden.
The camp offers 10 sports over six weeks from July 10 – August 20. Phone 1-204-661-5448 or check out www.legionathleticcamp.com
