Head Coach Gary Sova

Judo August 8 – 14, 2010 (Week 5)



Co-founder of Winnipeg's Inner City Judo Club, Gary Sova has been coaching at the Legion Athletic Camp since 1987.
Sova, a 6th Dan, has been associated with the sport of judo for 36 years.
As a competitor he was a member of Canada's 1972 National Youth Judo Team, 1982 Senior National Team and wore Bisons' colours while attending the University of Manitoba.
A two-time Western Canada Games Champion (1983 and 1987), Sova has taken his skills from the mats to the chalkboard where he has coached Manitoba judo teams at several Canada Winter Games and Junior National Championships.
For his dedication to the sport of judo, Sova, a Behavior Support Teacher in Winnipeg, was nominated for Manitoba Coach of the Year in 2000
Holding a Level 3 N.C.C.P. in judo, Sova's coaching philosophy is as stated, "to help athletes achieve their potential in sport and life."
Some of his athletes have included Kevin McIver, Dave Donaldson and May Baldo-Oduca.
Sova's most memorable judo moment to date was, "coaching Manitoba to a record nine medals at the 1999 Canada Winter Games."

Sova was named Coach of the Year in 2007 at the 46th Legion Athletic Camp
