Ricardo E. Martinez

Co-Camp Director, Head Coach Basketball

Ricardo is certified through Canada Basketball to train youth ages 9-17 in all aspects of Individual skill development. He has worked with athletes at various levels and enjoys sharing his love of physical activity and sport with others. Always seeking to improve himself, he's always on the lookout for ways in which he can increase his knowledge, training and skill set.

Ricardo is a Certified member of the Manitoba Fitness Council. He is a Resistance Training Coach, Group Fitness Leader, Personal Trainer and Yoga Instructor. He currently trains out of Insahyu Training & Therapy in Winnipeg and helps his clients with strength training, weight loss, injury management and flexibility. In his spare time, Ricardo enjoys being physically active. He has played basketball with his team, Shaka Dula, in the University of Winnipeg Men's League since 2001, capturing 3 division titles along the way. He also enjoys swimming & hiking during the warm months, as well as yoga, boxing, kickboxing and geocaching as year round activities.

Coach Martinez has been at Legion Athletic Camp since 2009 and leads a talented and dedicated group of coaches at Peace Gardens. With CIS and Rising Stars coaches totalling over 40 years of experience in the game at the highest levels, their goal is to help every athlete that attends their camp learn and retain as many skills as possible during their time together.

To these coaches, Peace Gardens is Basketball Heaven. "If you come with the desire to improve your skills, to meet new people and learn about the game of basketball, then our week is a great place to be."



Justin Thiessen

Co-Camp Director, Head Coach Basketball

Coach Thiessen has been an active coach for 17 years in volleyball, hockey, soccer, badminton and primarily basketball. He has been coaching at the Peace Gardens since 2010 and has experience at the CIS, Provincial, and Club levels. Currently, Coach Thiessen is Head of Coaching fir Alien Basketball Club in Suzhou, China and Head Coach of Sino Canada Warriors Basketball Academy in Shanghai, China. In addition to many years of coaching experience at all levels he holds a Masters Degree in Coaching from the University of Victoria in British Columbia and an Education Degree from Brandon University in Manitoba.

As a high school athlete at MacGregor Collegiate, Coach Thiessen was an honoured recipient of the Mckelvy Agencies Award for 'Dedication to Sport in the Community' and was named Most Dedicated Athlete. Always striving to build better community members as well as athletes is evident in his coaching style. Additionally, Coach Thiessen has spent time as Athletic Director for three different schools during his six year career in China.

"I coach because I want to give back to the game that has given me so much in my life. I coach at the Peace Gardens because it has beeen a huge part of my life since I first came as an athlete in the sixth grade and I hope to pass my experiences on to the next generation."
