Head Coach Kyllie Daniar (Lakehead University)

Basketball August 3 – August 9, 2008 (Week 4)

The Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation is pleased to announce that Kyllie Daniar will be a head coach for basketball at the 47th Legion Athletic Camp during the summer of 2008 (August 3 – 9, 2008).

“Coach Daniar is the type of coach we strive to recruit for the Legion Athletic Camp,” said camp founder and head coach George Phillips, of the 24 year-old Daniar. “She came here for seven years as an athlete (basketball) and for the last six years she has been in the role of an assistant coach (basketball). She has proven to be a great role model for the athletes in what one may achieve in life.”

Graduating from Thunder Bay’s Hammarskjold High School in Ontario, Daniar played university basketball with the Lakehead University Thunder Wolves.

An all-star athlete in a number of sports, Daniar is currently teaching high school in her home town of Thunder Bay with emphasis on kinesiology and history.

She has also coached basketball at the high school junior varsity and senior varsity and in a short time span has gained recognition from her peers, taking her team(s) to provincial finals.

Of her 13 years associated with the Legion Athletic Camp and her appointment to head coach status Daniar stated:  “To me, the Legion Athletic Camp means continuing to meet new people and teach athletes about the wonderful game of basketball!

“My philosophy when coaching basketball is to provide athletes with an opportunity to develop a sportsmanship like attitude with a heavy emphasize on individual and team development. As coaches we should provide a chance for athletes to reach their full potential both as an athlete and as an individual.  Although skills and drills will help win a game, the attitude and determination that the athlete will gain throughout the process is what matter at the end of the day.”

The famous William A. Ward quote that Daniar uses for inspiration off and on the court is:  The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."
