Head Coach Tom Crew (University of Manitoba)

Basketball August 1 - 7, 2010 (Week 4)

During his coaching career, of which 29 summers have been spent as a head coach at the Legion Athletic Camp, Tom Crew has coached at every level conceivable. From grassroots, right up to university, he continues to contribute.

In fact, the affable Crew has achieved a remarkable record of 776 wins versus 320 defeats (as of Jan. 9, 2006).

That is more than 1,000 games played, not including the countless hours practicing and in preparation.

One season while coaching three different teams, all at different levels of competition, he totaled 75 games!

After playing four years of high school basketball at Winnipegs St. Pauls High School, Crew went on to attend University of Manitoba.

During his university years, he played club basketball and also had a stint with the Manitoba Bisons junior team. He would later coach the Manitoba Bisons junior team along with his high school Alma matter.

But it is with the Charleswood Celtics junior high team, that Crew has left his mark. During this time, nearly 27 years, he has won 17 divisional championships.

For his dedication, Crew has been honoured with various awards including Outstanding Provincial Coach for the junior high school ranks and Outstanding Provincial Coach for a junior varsity or freshmen program.

He also coached the Manitoba Midget boys team, placing second in Western Canadian Championships.

Crew is also secretary treasurer for the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association and for many years a much requested clinician.
Of his Legion Athletic Camp experience, Crew states: "It is an opportunity to work with kids who really need coaching and want to be coached. Most of them are the leaders of the places they come from and they want to get better.

"What is great (about Legion Athletic Camps) is that if a kid is a good athlete and wants to take the next step, he will benefit from coming here. And if a kid is just starting out and wants to learn to get better, they too will benefit from coming here."
